Hugg: user-submitted green news - Sat, 2008/11/15 - 7:44pm

Imagine you're drunk. Toasted. No way you're driving home. Too far to walk. No cash in your pocket, and the ATM card's back at home. Then you see it. This little green bug of a vehicle, pulling up to you, and someone says, "Need a lift? We don't charge."

"Who are these people and what do they want?" you think. Or did you say that out loud? They proceed to tell you that they're from Eco Cabs, a company that is providing these emissions free cabs, for free, courtesy the sponsor enveloping their vehicle, 7UP in this case.

Greening the Black Car

Hugg: user-submitted green news - Wed, 2008/11/12 - 7:50pm

While NYC is having a hard time clearing the air when it comes to taxis, some claiming they're not as safe as the 15 mpg relics common on the road now, Boston and San Francisco have a solid option that goes far beyond being a transportation service that's replaced the black car with a green car.

Fix It: Get Your Green DIY Supplies

Hugg: user-submitted green news - Tue, 2008/11/11 - 8:37pm

Part of living a sustainable life is not taking the normal route of tossing something when it ceases to work/look/be as it did upon first purchase. Actually, let me rephrase. That's not a normal route unless you're an American. We're pretty bad about tossing stuff thoughtlessly. We've been able to do so without consequence (or so we thought) for many years. And with the superabundance of disposable products, it seemed like a habit that made sense.

MIT Designs New Solution for Public Transit

Hugg: user-submitted green news - Tue, 2008/11/11 - 8:29pm

The individual automobile is a luxury American society is not soon to abandon. The abnormally long trips between urban centers combined with the independence the individual American feels concerning their own car are two ideological problems in direct opposition to a well-run public transport system.  But researchers at MIT have developed a compromise- an individual car that operates within a public transport system. The “City Car” as it has been dubbed, is designed to be a two-seater electric car, powered by lithium-ion batteries. But the real innovation come in the fact that the car is designed to weight only 1,000 to 1,200 pounds and collapse to fit together like a shopping cart, allowing up to eight of them to park in an individual parking space.

Toyota Prius goes Solar

Hugg: user-submitted green news - Mon, 2008/11/10 - 4:30pm

The 'Prius' is Latin for '(to go...) before'. Quite fittingly it heralds a new era of hip cars which have moved away from Henry Ford's vision. Today, they are petrol powered environmental ogres. Necessary 'evils', for cars have been the harbingers of human advancement by taking the wheel much forward. They may be Hollywood's latest fad...Leonardo DiCaprio owns one, but they also are truly one of the most practical environmentally cars on the roads today. The 2008

Curbing the Energy Appetite of Older Homes

Hugg: user-submitted green news - Thu, 2008/11/06 - 8:10pm

It can be hard to live in a green house, especially when they’re what are often categorized as “older homes.” Not your new-fangled office building with geothermal heating, or house made of shipping containers. Older Victorian style homes, popular in New England and subject to reprisals until as late as the 1950s, are commonplace in my small-time town. My current job is even housed in one, a 1960s recreation with wrap-around porch. While the style is endearing, the fact is that house is a glutton for unnecessary electrical waste.
